Nuns Colts continue winning streak...

Nuneaton Colts kept up their winning start in their first away game of the season. After last week’s strong victory over Broadstreet, a few injuries meant the Nuns took a depleted squad to Leamington and came away with a convincing 62-6 victory. It was a good opportunity to give lots of game time to some of the more recent additions to the squad, which was firmly taken.

The first points came as Sam Everett kicked for territory into the Leamington half. A good chase from the backs caused a turnover which released centre Charlie Smith to sprint to the line and score his first try of the season. This was swiftly followed by another as Sam Everett broke through the defence to score under the posts. Jack Jones slotted home the conversion to make it 12-0.
Moments later, Sam Everett broke through the Leamington line and was finally stopped by a scrambling Leamington defence, but managed to link up with full back Nick Coltman who finished under the posts. The fourth try came after a period of pressure inside the Leamington 22. The forwards played through numerous phases as they drove towards the line, with number 8 Ben Howells crashing over on his first game since rejoining the club. The try was converted and Nuneaton went 26-0 ahead.

Leamington kept their spirits up and started to exert some pressure of their own. After a spell in the Nuneaton 22 they were awarded a penalty, and successfully took a kick at goal to get themselves on the score sheet. Nuneaton weren’t to be deterred though, and further tries from Sam Everett and Jack Coldrick increased the half time advantage to 38-3.

After the break, Leamington were the first on the attack and came back from the Nuneaton 22 with 3 points from a rare drop goal. Nuneaton were trying out some of their set plays and strike moves, and one of these released blind side winger Isaac Bailey who powered through from his own half towards the line. He was caught just a few metres short of the line, but was able to offload to centre James Burgess whose excellent supporting run enabled him to score.

Nuneaton’s eighth try came from a line out close to the Leamington line that was cleanly taken and Ben Howells peeled round to touchdown for the second time in the match. Shortly afterwards some slick handling in the backs sent winger Scott Chapman-Hall towards the corner, but he was held up agonisingly short. From the ensuing scrum, the ball was picked from the base and Ben Howells completed a dream return to the team by completing his hattrick. The scoring was completed by Jack Coldrick scoring Nuneaton’s tenth try leaving a final score of 62-6.
This victory makes it 3 wins from 3 games in the league and leaves Nuneaton in 5th place with games in hand over those above them. Next up is a tough home game against Old Laurentians who currently lead the league table.
