Tremendous team performance topples league leaders

Nuneaton Colts played host to a Broadstreet team that were top of the table, being unbeaten in their first four games, on a lovely autumn afternoon. The early exchanges were tense, with both sides up for a good contest, as the action was concentrated in the midfield. Nuneaton started to exert some pressure, but Broadstreet spread the ball wide from defence and looked to be gaining some ground out wide before they knocked on. Full back Nick Coltman picked up the loose ball and took the full advantage as he danced through the Broadstreet defenders and drove to the line to open the scoring. The conversion was narrowly wide so Nuns took a 5-0 lead.

Nuneaton kept the pressure on right from the restart and were unlucky to be denied a second try after a lovely piece of teamwork ended with Nick Coltman being adjudged to have lost control of the ball in the act of scoring. Not to be deterred, the Nuns kept on the attack and after a tap penalty five metres out the forwards were initially repelled but managed to recycle the ball which was released to Sam Everett to score near the posts. The conversion was good and Nuns were now 12-0 up.
This sparked a reaction in Broadstreet who piled on the pressure. The Nuneaton defence was fantastic and held out for a long period before the line was finally breached. The conversion was made to leave the half time score 12-7.

Broadstreet came out firing in the second half and scored early to level the scores at 12-12. There could have been a momentum shift in the game, but Nuneaton struck back, influenced by strong carries from man of the match James Fellows and some impressive driving mauls, to take the upper hand again. A nice piece of play resulted in the forwards driving over, with Hayden Cottle emerging as the scorer of the third try.

Broadstreet weren’t taking it lying down and enjoyed a sustained period of pressure as they looked to take the next score. The Nuneaton defence was immense and held firm to keep their advantage on the scoreboard. Time was starting to run out for Broadstreet, and a couple of penalties enabled Nuneaton to get back into the Broadstreet 22, where after a few phases the ball broke to Jack Coldrick to break through the defence to score the decisive try.

The game finished with Nuneaton ahead 22-12 to maintain their 100% start to the season -a brilliant team performance. Next up is an away trip to Leamington as the team start using their games in hand to climb the league table.
