Experimental Nuns side go down to experience Broadstreet squad in County Cup Semi.

Huw Thomas26 Oct 2018 - 22:18

The Nuns won’t be retaining the County Cup this season after losing 47-0 to Broadstreet in the Semi Final.

The Nuns took on Broadstreet in the Cup Semi Final and used the game as an opportunity to look at some new combinations and give some players 1st team exposure. They came up against a full strength Broadstreet squad who showed a little more cohesion up front and were slick on the counter attack to take advantage of any errors to run out 47-0 winners.

The squad showed a number of changes from recent league fixtures and a number of players made 1st XV debuts. Up front started Joji Volaikisuva, Callum Grant-Smith and Ben Holmes, in the second row there was a debut for Jake Arms alongside Sam Wallis and in the back-row Elliot Norman made his debut with Danny Southall and Wills Messum completing the pack. In the backline Tom Smitham partnered Richard Johnston, Moses Liwaliwa was partnered by Tiarnan Kelly for his first appearance of the season with Sion Cowdy coming back in on the wing, Nemani Rayabo on the other and another debutant was Portuguese full back Simao Van Zeller.

Playing into a breeze the Nuns had their fair share of possession throughout the half but struggled to gain any meaningful territory. They did though have the first opportunity for points when Johnston opted for goal from a penalty 40m’s out. The ball fell short and the subsequent clearance kick put play back into their half.

Broadstreet got their first try from a scrum push over and then soon after worked the ball up the blind side from a line out maul. They scored another three tries in the first half with the last coming on the stroke of half time to take a 33-0 lead.

The Nuns used half time to make some substitutions with Southall replaced by Skyrme having picked up an ankle injury, Ed Taplin came on for Messum with Grant-Smith moving to number 8 and Dylan Bale came on in the centre for Kelly.

If the nuns were to have any chance over a comeback then they needed to score early but it was Street who got some early points after collecting a high kick and running in. Former Nun Andy Murray completed his hattrick on the hour to leave the score at 47-0.

Throughout the second half the Nuns had plenty of territory and possession and managed to create some opportunities in the attacking 22m but too many times in-accuracies meant that set pieces were lost or the ball was turned over.

Broadstreet deserved their win but the Nuns will have learned plenty about players who were stepping up for the first time and will stand them in good shape moving forward.
