A large squad of senior and aspiring players took on Lutterworth in this 4 x 20 minutes friendly encounter. With Elliot Brown leading the way the Nuns had a good workout against a team that tested their defence thoroughly.
The homeside made the early running with some penetrating drives and the Nuns were largely on the defensive. Both sides lacked cohesion as they went through the familiarisation process. A pacey run by Dylan Bale led to a try for Manasa Volaikisuva which Ben Cooper was unable to convert.
The second 20 minute period saw Nuneaton largely defend as they struggled to find the continuity to breakdown a stubborn defence. Their lineout play showed signs of early season rustiness.
Into the third quarter and Nuns were able to attack more with Matt Guilfoyle looking slick with his speed of passing. Good approach play by the forwards created space for Tom Smitham to scythe through a defence to score a try which Cooper converted.
With Sam Greening leading a charge Tom Leeson crossed for a try which Richard Johnston converted. The Nuns were now looking more composed and together as they dominated the final exchanges.
A useful workout on which to build for the season. With some senior players yet to return, the coaches have some work to do in preparing the Nuns for the opening fixture against Derby on 1st September.
