Betty Holmes passes away

As “Queen” of the Nuns’ kitchen, her catering skills were legendary

It is with great sadness that we report the death of Betty Holmes, aged 89, on Monday 20th April.

Betty, wife of the late Wally (1925-2009), has been a member of The Nuns for many, many years. She was a “one-off”. She was a larger-than-life character - warm, friendly, full of fun, with a great sense of humour and she always joined in everything. She was a pleasure to have around. As “Queen” of the Nuns’ kitchen, her catering skills were legendary. Not only did she organise the players’ meals every week during the playing season but she also managed the Club’s annual dinner each year. She had an army of friends who formed her catering corps and were there when Betty called.

Betty was a very popular lady, a great Club member and a tremendous asset to Nuneaton RFC. She was made an Honorary Life Member to record her immense service and hard work to the Club. As well as supporting Wally – Nuneaton RFC’s first international player for England - she has also had the pleasure of watching her son and grandson wear the Club’s colours – her grandson Gary being Club Captain at the time of Wally’s death.

Our thoughts are with Martin, Carolyn and their family.
