A look back on the 2017-18 season for Nuneaton RFC Under 7s team.

We started the new season on the first Sunday in September. We had around 20 players that were stepping up from the Rugger Rats team (ages 4-6) and we welcomed a few new faces to the squad.

Starting with a few simple games we began to build on the basics of tag rugby. Training is geared around fun games to keep the kids active, engaged, to encourage teamwork and to make sure they are eager to return the following week. These first few training sessions enable the coaches to identify areas of development and to introduce some new games to the players.

(If you would like your child to play rugby, drop by on Sunday mornings in September, or contact the Team Manager for the correct section)

October soon came around and we had our first taste of playing fixtures against other clubs. We met Old Coventrians, Barkers’ Butts, Old Wheats and Claverdon. The tournament at Barkers’ was a great experience for the team. Lots of rugby was played as we fielded extra teams to fill in for absent clubs.

The winter arrived all too quickly and with it came some awful weather. Deep snow, waterlogged pitches and frozen ground meant a lot of cancelled training and fixtures. Whenever possible we took to the fields and the kids made the most of the opportunity to play. No tears in the wind, no moaning about cold hands, they just enjoyed playing rugby with their team mates.

Towards the end of the season we enter the festival period. Clubs make the most of the improved weather and invite us to attend their festival. We entered as many tournaments as we could submitting several teams on each occasion. The players scored great tries, put up some excellent defence and the teamwork is building each week.

Whilst no team is technically allowed to ‘win’ at the under 7s level, Nuneaton RFC demonstrated just how good they were against many of the opposition. This group of players has both ability and determination, whilst demonstrating the core values of rugby - Teamwork, Respect, Enjoyment, Discipline and Sportsmanship. On two occasions Nuneaton RFC U7s were awarded with the Fair Play Trophy.

The improvement over the season has been remarkable. The coaching team were thoroughly impressed by the efforts of all the players. It was also great to see friendships being made that may last a lifetime.

We look forward to seeing all you back in September and hope to see a few new faces too.
