Instructions

Nuns 7 Forest 41

Nuns 15s were unable to recover from a 5 try blitz in the opening 20 minutes coming second best to a strong Leicester Forest outfit in their season opener

It took the visitors just 5 minutes to register their first of seven tries in what was a forgettable first half for the home side at liberty way on Sunday. Forest ruthlessly punished Nuns for a sloppy defensive start to their Under 15s Season. Matt Watson did well to bring down the forest winger after a turnover in midfield left the home defence sleeping but a clever offload out of the tackle found a support runner who scored wide out

The second try came just 5 minutes later in a similar fashion as once again the possession starved home side were unable to protect the ball in contact and the Forest half backs moved the ball along the line where several missed tackles allowed forest a run in down the edge. The touch judge graciously giving the benefit of the doubt to the attacker after admitted being unsighted despite touchline protests from the nuns covering defence, the forest kicker unable to improve.

With the scores at 10 -0 the shellshocked home side had still not been out of their own half and as the confidence built in the visitors they looked to attack from everywhere. A scramble defence only served to delay the inevitable 3rd score as yet again Nuns spilled the ball as they tried to work their way out of trouble, the Forest attack scored again as advantage was being played, this time converted.

Forest 4th and best came on 18 minutes as from a line out on half way the fly half hit an unmarked inside runner who carved his way through a flat footed defence to go under the posts for another converted try. Their 5th followed soon after as once again nuns coughed up possession and the defence were slow to react while Forest decisively kicked the ball behind Nuns, the chasing winger gathering and making the 1 on 1 with Nuns full back look too easy as he glided in, this time unconverted. At 29 -0 down the half time whistle came as a welcome relief to Nuns.

The second half was a more hotly contested affair but there was still little to celebrate for the watching Nuns support as a speculative kick ahead was allowed to bounce into the hands of a chasing forest player who won the foot race to the line for their 6th.

Nuns did make life a little less easy for their Leicestershire opposition for longer periods in the second half with more physicality at the breakdown and actually making a few forrays forward thanks to big runs from Bell, Rourke and Court. As nuns enjoyed some possession frustrations grew and so did the disicipline from an otherwise well drilled Forest team. This affording Nuns enough field position with which to mount a couple of attacks of their own which Forest defence was equal to as Nuns were unable to find a gap.

Unfortunately, once again a clearance kick made spectators out of the Nuns winger and fullback, watching on as the ball bounced into the hands of a Forest chaser gifting them their easiest of the seven.

With Englands world cup opener v Tonga beckoning in the clubhouse Nuns had the last say with the final touch of a shortened game as Sutton burst over from close range. Scant conciliation for a well beaten Nuns side who now know the size of the challenge U15s Rugby will bring.

A much improved second half performance and the ‘blooding’ of a couple of rookies meant Nuns were able to take some positives from the match and the somewhat harsh lesson in ball protection and defensive organisation will give the squad plenty to work on.
