The Rugger Rats take part in their first tournament at Liberty Way.

After many weeks of planning by the U12s management and coaching team the big event was finally here. Nuneaton RFC opened the doors to the 2017 Minis and Juniors Tournament. The sun rose over the training grounds and the dew soon lifted from the pitches. It was looking like a good start to the tournament at Liberty Way.

The car park soon filled and the overspill filled the surrounding area. Players and parents began to pass through the entrance to take their place pitch-side amongst the stalls and event shelters. The Rugger Rats had their own dedicated training area with three temporary pitches in place.

Tags and belts were soon distributed so the coaching team could begin the warm ups for the Under 6s. It was a good turn-out with nearly 40 Rugger Rats ready to take part in their first tournament.

The players were separated into 6 teams, with each being allocated a Rugger Rats coach to manage the team and referee the games. The first round of games was soon underway with some great tag work and a couple of early tries.

Games lasted approximately 6 to 7 minutes each before the teams rotated to play another team. The players were enthusiastic and grabbed the opportunity to score whenever possible whilst also demonstrating some excellent defensive work.

Lines were held, gaps were identified, tags were grasped and we witnessed some great acceleration into spaces to get beyond the gain line.

After 5 fun rounds of excellent tag rugby, the competition drew to a close for the Rugger Rats. All of the players had contributed to a thoroughly entertaining morning. After a conversation with the M&J Chairman, Jason Etherton, it was agreed that all players taking part in the meeting would be awarded a tournament medal for their efforts.

The ceremony took place at the Club House and the medals were presented by the First Team Captain, Elliot Brown. The future looks bright for Nuneaton RFC with so many young players across all of the age groups.

The Rugger Rats team would like to thank Wendy Watson, Dan Masser, Steve Bird, all of the U12s coaching team, and the many volunteers that helped to make the day a great success. We wish the U12s every success as they step up to the Junior Section next year.
