Nuns make light work of Derby heavyweights...

Nuns make light work of Derby heavyweights...

The Nuns opened the new season with this well earned win over a bulky Derby side. Outscoring the opposition 6 tries to 4, the Nuns bagged a bonus point to go third in Midlands Premier. Only 5 players were in the match day squad that started last seasons opening game. So a much changed Nuns side took the field in perfect playing conditions.

Derby took the initiative from the kick off. Keeping the ball they went through their attacking phases but the Nuns tackled low and defended resolutely. Derby did win a penalty 40 metres out and from a central position George Castledine kicked the goal to give the visitors an early lead. Nuns wasted an attacking opportunity as they failed to win a lineout from their own throw in. The Nuns continued to attack but were nearly caught out when Derby’s full back Oliver Saffell intercepted and ran 60 metres before Nuns debutant Dylan Bale got back with a try saving tackle. Derby continued to attack using their weighty pack to inch their way upfield. On 20 minutes they crossed the Nuns line but the ball was held up. From the resultant 5m scrum the ball was quickly switched wide and Saffell went in for the try near the corner which was not converted. Nuns were holding up well in the scrum but couldn’t make progress in the backs as slow ball allowed the visitors to stifle the danger. On 27 minutes Elliott Brown got in the clear and only a high tackle prevented him scoring. The referee awarded a penalty try and Derby winger McGrath Van Wyk was yellow carded. A man short didn’t stop the visitors attacking. Ben Marlow rounded the Nuns defence to score near the posts but Castledine surprisingly missed the easiest of conversions. On 36 minutes Nuns were penalised for holding on, but from 40m Castledine again missed a kick well within his range. Both sides wasted further opportunities before good interplay by the Nuns put the supporting Adie Hall in for a try under the posts which Huw Thomas converted. A close first half came to an end with the Nuns leading 14-13.

Could the visitors keep up the tempo in the second half? It didn’t take the Nuns long to show that they could. On the counter attack hooker Dale Bowyer jinxed and dummied his way through a mesmerised Derby defence to score wide out. Just 5 minutes later and Nuns had their fourth try. Full back Richard Johnston got in the clear and rounded the Derby defence to give Thomas the easiest of conversions. Nuns now had a 13 point lead and it wasn’t long before they extended it. From an attacking position flanker Arron Skryme took a pass at speed and from a great angle cut through a floundering defence to score near the posts and again Thomas added the extras. In an 11minute spell the Nuns had scored 19 points and stretched their lead to 20 points. Derby did pull a try back when Ben Marlow got over in the corner for an unconverted try.

With 20 minutes to go Nuns wasted a golden opportunity. From an up and under Nuns gathered the ball in front of the visitors posts only to concede a penalty for holding on. Encouraged by this let off the visitors went downfield and with their bulky forwards pressed the Nuns line. Desperate defence kept them out but at a price. Nuns prop James Redman was yellow carded. When the game restarted James Herrington was driven over for a try which Castledine converted to give the visitors a try bonus point. Only 8 points behind Derby tried desperately to get a score in the last 12 minutes that would give them a second bonus point. The Nuns however remained in control and when Thomas stroked over a penalty the result was secure. There was still time for Johnston to grab his second try and with the conversion the Nuns wrapped up the win.

A deserved win for the Nuns in a game in which a number of new faces showed they were up to Level 5 standard of rugby. With a number of players still to return to the fray this was an encouraging performance and bodes well for the rest of the season.
