Nuns just fail to end their season on a winning note...

Nuns just fail to end their season on a winning note...

Ravaged by injuries and non availability a much changed Nuns squad entertained a Doncaster Phoenix side visiting Liberty Way for the first time. Among the eighteen names, Nuns gave a debut to Adam Huxford and welcomed back Theo Knight from a lengthy absence. With both teams occupying mid table positions in Midland Premier there was little at stake but that did not stop them putting on an entertaining game.
The Nuns made the early running with forwards Tom Aherne and Ben Holmes making ground only for poor handling to bring the attacks to an end. The Nuns continued to dominate play and on 7 minutes Doncaster’s scrum half, Sam Pocklington was yellow carded - but the Nuns failed to take advantage. Another chance was wasted with a knock on before Adie Hall was injured and replaced by Arron Skryme. Doncaster had spent 20 minutes in their own half, but despite their territorial dominance the Nuns had nothing to show on the scoreboard. When the visitors did get out of their half they were deadly. A few attacking phases later and winger Josh Fowler got over in the corner for an unconverted try. Worse was to follow.

This time it was No.8 Martin Brink who scored in the corner and Sam Brooke added the conversion to give the visitors a 12-0 lead. With their confidence high Doncaster continued to press and were breaking tackles as they pressurised the Nuns defence – but the homeside held firm. Indeed after a mix up in the visitors defence Todd Bullions took advantage and went over for an unconverted try. That brought the first half scoring to an end with the Nuns trailing 12-5.

The second half opened with the Nuns unable to retain possession, but the visitors had no such trouble. With good handling and effective off loading they scored their third try. Seva Buluumakau powered his way over for an unconverted try. Seventeen minutes into the half and Doncasters Josh Fowler was yellow carded after Jackson Hughes was obstructed in full flight. Nuns wasted the attacking line out position and the visitors easily ran the ball out of defence. The visitors went further ahead when full back James Wright got on the end of a through kick and with Brook’s conversion they led by 19 points. Nuns wasted 2 further attacking opportunities as their line out failed to press home the advantage. The Nuns eventually got a break when crafty Tom Smitham picked up a loose ball to score an unconverted try.

The Nuns kept attacking and Danny Southall made a powerful run only for his wayward pass to bring his good work to an end. As the game entered the last 10 minutes Brook got free and despite Theo Knights best effort he could not prevent the try. The Nuns continued to press and Adie Hall burst through to score a try which Richard Johnston converted. There was still time for the Nuns to score the best try of the afternoon. After strong running and excellent layoffs Bullions, Hall and Rudi Reid combined to put winger Adam Stauvers in for a try which Johnston converted. With that score the Nuns grabbed 2 bonus points from a game at times they never looked like getting.

So the Nuns’ season comes to an end. A season in which inconsistency brought on by injuries and unavailability deprived them of a chance to challenge for promotion.
