Nuns tame Newbolds' heavyweight pack to take win...

Nuns tame Newbolds' heavyweight pack to take win...

The Nuns made one change from the side that beat Longton with Apo Satala unavailable Todd Bullions moved to No. 8 with Callum Grant-Smith moving to the back row and Ryan Leake coming in at hooker for his starting debut. The backs were unchanged.

The game opened up with the Nuns having plenty of possession but poor tactical kicking relieved the pressure on the visitors. With Newbold’s bulky pack, direct running appeared to be the key to success. On 7 minutes that proved to be the case. The impressive Ben Kirby finished off some swift handling and with a Rory Vowles conversion the homeside had a 7 point lead. The Nuns continued to win possession but on 11minutes were penalised for holding on to the ball in the tackle – this proved to be a regular occurrence as referee Debenham was quick to blow his whistle at the breakdown. Ex Nun Dan O’Brien kicked the goal from 40 metres and Newbold were on the scoreboard. The Nuns pack were holding their own in the set scrum and meeting the heavier opposition forwards head on in the tackle.

Poor handling stopped the Nuns adding to their score until the 28th minute when after a threatening run by Jackson Hughes deep in Newbold’s 22, they won a penalty. Opting for a kick to the corner they drove forward from the lineout and Matthew Gibbs crashed over for a converted try. On a rare occasion when Newbold got the ball to their backs a kick ahead has foiled by Kirby whose counter attack was only snuffed out by some desperate defence. Just before the interval Newbold lost their own scrum but Nuns failed to take advantage as a cross field kick sailed in to touch on the full. The Nuns led 14-3 at halftime but should have had more to show for the amount of possession they had won.

The second half continued in much the same fashion with the Nuns wasting attacking opportunities and the whistle happy referee not allowing the game to flow. Newbold continued to throw their forwards at the Nuns defence and the homeside tackled heroically. As the game entered the final quarter the pace of the game began to tell on Newbold’s pack. At every breakdown, it appeared at least one of the forwards needed attention. On 65minutes Nuns lost their centre Timothy Douglas to a yellow card and shortly after Newbold’s prop Ben Nuttall joined him in the sin bin.

With the visitors pack tiring the Nuns drove forward and close to the try line Newbold collapsed the scrum and a penalty try was awarded. Realising, under the new law, that the conversion is awarded without a kick being taken, the quick thinking Newbold scrum half, Phil Reed, quickly restarted the game with a short kick off. However the Nuns were alert and foiled the cunning plan with a through kick which was, under pressure, spilled by the defence and Vowles gathered the loose ball to run in for the Nuns fourth try and with it the try bonus point. Vowles added the conversion and the Nuns had a 25 point lead. With all the stoppages and the light fading the second half over ran a full 10 minutes before the referee blew the final whistle.

A satisfactory result for the Nuns but a performance they will have to improve upon as they face up to next weeks challenge from the play off chasing Newport (Salop).
