Nuns score 8 tries in demolition of Longton...

Nuns 52 Longton 19.

There were 3 changes to the starting XV that beat Lichfield on 16 December. Tom Smitham replaced Huw Thomas, Todd Bullions in for the injured Danny Southall and Ben Kirby took Harry Garforth’s place who is off to New Zealand.

In heavy under foot conditions the Nuns went on the attack from the kick off. After their pack had set up a driving maul, winger Jackson Hughes got in space and skipped through a disorganised defence to score a try near the posts. Rory Vowles added the conversion and the Nuns were off to a flying start. Sensing the visitors defence was flimsy the Nuns took the direct approach with No.8 Apo Satala storming through to score a try which went unconverted. Just four minutes later and the Nuns added their third try. Deep in their own half the Nuns halted a Longton drive and won a scrum. Quick ball put full back Ben Kirby in the clear and from 65 metres out he raced in to score a try which Vowles converted. Eleven minutes gone and the Nuns had a nineteen point lead. Longton finally got into the game with their weighty pack grinding forward and it was flanker Mikey Allen who was credited with the touchdown and fly half Grant Hallam added the conversion. With both sides coping with the muddy conditions more tries seemed inevitable and it wasn’t long before the Nuns got their fourth and a try bonus point. Flanker Todd Bullions shrugged off would be tacklers and strode in under the posts for a converted try. Longton were still persisting with making the most of their forward power - rarely did the backs receive a pass. On 28 minutes the sixth try of the afternoon was scored. The Longton pack nudged their way forward and from short range prop Craig Wilson was forced over for an unconverted try. Back came the Nuns and after an outrageous offload by Satala, Scott Makepeace was on hand to rumble in for a converted try. There was still time in the half for another try. Nuns declined a penalty shot at goal - opting for a scrum - and scrum half Tom Smitham went over for a try which Vowles converted. The Nuns led 40-12 at the interval and the scoreboard attendant took a much needed break.

The second half couldn’t possibly match the first for scoring and so it proved. Longton kept to their plan of keeping it tight amongst their forwards. Play after play saw them retain the ball but hardly progress towards the Nuns line. Good defensive play by the Nuns’ pack, more than matched the visitors. At last Longton tried something different with a cross field kick but the Nuns’ defence easily dealt with the danger and cleared their lines. The Nuns were unable to get their hands on the ball and Longton continued to grind their way around the pitch. This continued till the 62nd minute and with Longton camped near the try line they were awarded a penalty try and with no conversion needed the visitor’s added 7 points to their score. With three tries in the bag, Longton sensed there was a bonus point within their grasp if they could score a fourth. A sense of urgency entered their play but it was the Nuns who moved the score along. The backs got their hands on the ball and a strong run and inside pass by Tim Douglas set Richard Johnston free and he romped in under the posts. Vowles added the conversion and the Nuns were on the verge of 50 points, leading 47-19. In the closing minute the Nuns grabbed their eighth try when Kirby went over for his second try and although the conversion was missed a 52 points to 19 win was a good afternoons work.

A convincing win for the Nuns against a limited Longton side. Greater challenges lie ahead in the coming weeks starting with the visit of Newbold next week.
