Nuns 62 - 5 Spartans - Away - 27/09/2009
<<Back

This was the Nuns first outing to Spartans.
Again the weather was warm and sunny and the Spartans pitch was very smooth and flat, although the grass was a little short.
The Spartans lads are certainly big lads although skill and fitness couldn't be judged until the game started.
As expected Nuns started brightly although they were suffering from a lot of marginal decisions going against them for a second week in a row.

On ten minutes Nuns started to open out the Spartan defence when flanker Richard Howard opened up the Spartan defence to run in from his own half, being chased strongly all the way to the line.
Nuns were now completely dominating all play. Two minutes later Howard broke through again for a replay of his first try only to offload to centre Dan Leake, on the line for Leake's first try of the day. Both trys were converted by Tim Smith to make the score 14-0.
Nuns were now scoring at will against a Spartans side whose heads had dropped.
Number 8 Harry Shillcock then crashed over for try number 3 which went unconverted.

With 20 minutes gone it was the turn of flanker Charlie Knight to burst through the Spartan flanks, from the Nuns half, to break through four attempted tackles for the fourth try. This time Smith converted.
The last try of the game came from winger Louis Childs who really showed his explosive pace, again to break through from his own half.
Half time score 36-0

The second half started off pretty much as the first ended.
Second half trys by Leake (3) and Howard sealed the victory for the Nuns. Two of the trys were converted.
To their credit Spartans came back strongly in the final 10 minutes and managed a consolation try after forward pressure close to the Nuns line paid off.
Lots of credit to all the Nuns lads today who put in so much effort. Also quite a few lads playing out of their normal position.
A warm welcome to James Hines-Randle who played his first game for the Nuns and aquitted himself well as fly half when he came on for the second half.

Lots of plusses - some strong tacking particularly by James Moreton, Jordan Rice, Dan Leake and Brandon Carter.

Great runs by most of the players and hard luck Jack for your epic run up the line (50m's+) that almost resulted in a try.

Tough battle promised at Earlsdon next week..................
